COURSE OUTLINE

All teaching is done in French, even for absolute beginners who have never studied French before. You are encouraged to use the language from day one!

A wide range of methods are used in class to improve your conversation skills, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and linguistic structure. Newspapers, commercials, cartoons, texts by well-known French authors and video recordings will add to your course literature.

CONVERSATION You will learn more about France and its people. As your class progress more time is spent on conversational exercises where students debate and discuss cultural subjects such as French history, literature, society and politics. You will also practise your capacity to cover current affairs. News from radio, TV and newspapers is often the basis for discussions.

The courses will also include role-plays, study visits and home exercises. The program encourages active student participation.

ADVANCED LEVELS More advanced students will also get an orientation of French culture and political and social circumstances together with some knowledge about French literature and the development of the French language. Semester program students will also write a paper within a special subject area such as the language, the literature, French culture or social aspects of France and the French speaking world.

TESTS & CREDITS

The progress of each student is evaluated with several tests of different types during his or her stay, Contrôle Continu. The more intensive the program the more tests you will sit.

After the courses you receive an attestation with oral and written grades. The student's total attendance and participation in class is also mentioned. All grades are given at a scale of 0-20 where a 10 means that you have passed.

ACTIVITIES

To learn a language properly you need to spend time speaking it outside the classroom. It is important to practice the things you have learnt in class "for real".

INSTED arranges a number of activities to facilitate the practice of spoken French. In addition to giving the students the opportunity to speak French, these activities give an insight into the French way of life and the history and culture of Chamonix and the Haute Savoie region. A selection of activities that the school organises during the courses are:

- A discovery game in the streets of Chamonix where you get to know the town and its people.

- Cinema nights with French films.

- Visits to and lectures from local companies and organisations.

- Visit to the Alpine museum in Chamonix and other exhibitions in the region.
- Visit to Annecy - known as "Little Venice" of the French Alps.

- A day trip to a vineyard at the Geneva Lake.

- Cheese and wine tasting.

Some of these activities are not included in the course fee. Less activities will be arranged during periods with few students at the school.

SPORTS Winter and Summer

The seasons show two very different faces of Chamonix. In the summer there is rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking whilst winter offers skiing, ski touring and ice climbing. No matter the time of year - the Chamonix valley will keep you busy!

SKIING Surrounded by the highest peaks and largest mountain terrain in Europe, it is no wonder that Chamonix has become such a skier's Mecca.

EXPLORE THE MOUNTAINS The guide offices in Chamonix are a great source of information about trails and overnight huts, refuges in the mountains.

CLIMBING The Chamonix valley offers great conditions for rock climbing - the long granite walls in the Mont-Blanc range are world famous. Further down in the valley, there are several good sport climbing areas.
In winter, try ice climbing, an exciting sport where you use crampons and ice axes on your way up slippery surfaces of blue ice. Alpine climbing, where you challenge high altitude gullies to your peak of choice, is also hugely popular.

MOUNTAIN BIKING During late spring, usually starting in April, you will find many long and fun trails to follow along the mountain sides. There are many places in Chamonix where you can rent a bike.
