KCP International Language Institute
KCP provides the serious student with a unique opportunity to achieve proficiency in the Japanese language through total immersion. With a student-teacher ratio of 11 to 1, KCP serves approximately 800 students per year. While most students are from other parts of Asia and all instruction is in Japanese, English-speaking staff provide language support, including special tutorials, as the need arises for our many U.S. students.
KCP Facilities
KCP International Language Institute is located in Shinjuku: the business, entertainment, and shopping center of Tokyo. The campus is a 5-minute walk from the Shinjuku Gyoenmae Subway Station on the Marunouchi Line, or a 10-minute walk from Shinjuku san-chome subway station on the Toei Shinjuku subway line. Shinjuku Avenue is lined with tall buildings, shopping complexes, and office structures. The KCP neighborhood, however, is filled with smaller buildings and shops. Shinjuku Gyoen, one of the largest parks in Tokyo and one of the most beautiful, is only a 5-minute walk from KCP. There are also a number of smaller parks close by where students can enjoy a peaceful break.
Offices are open 8:15 am-6 pm Monday through Friday. Morning classes start at 8:30 am; afternoon classes end by 6 pm. Campus amenities include a main office; classrooms; a study room; a computer room with word processing in English and Japanese, printer, and Internet access; and a sick room.
Certification
KCP International Language Institute is a certified member of the Association for the Promotion of Japanese Language Education (APJLE), under the jurisdiction of the Immigration Bureau of the Ministry of Justice in Japan. KCP has been a certified member of APJLE since 1990. Our member ID is A286. All of KCP’s courses have been authorized by APJLE.
The goal of APJLE is to improve the quality of Japanese language education institutions by granting approval to those conforming to the National Standards for Management of Japanese Language Education Institutions (developed by the Cooperative Research Council of the Ministry of Education, with the Ministries of Justice and Foreign Affairs) and by providing training for school personnel. It is the governing body for Japanese language schools.
Intensive Japanese Language
This course is the main focus of this program. KCP realizes that students enter with varying Japanese language backgrounds, which may have stressed different aspects of learning. Special emphasis is placed on holistic language education which stresses all 4 communication skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—to help students achieve both general knowledge of the Japanese language and practical ability.
We employ the Direct Method: classes are taught in Japanese without a vehicular language such as English. We do this because KCP teaches students from all over the world, and there is truly no common language other than Japanese. But more important, we want to help students to think in Japanese by listening in Japanese. If we were to translate Japanese to students’ native languages (often with totally different grammar structures), it would take a significant cognitive effort for students to convert what they hear into Japanese—a task that is counter-productive to learning to think in Japanese.
