Berlitz Language Centre

The roots of Berlitz go back over 125 years to Providence Rhode Island, where our founder, Maximilian Berlitz, developed the principles of The Berlitz Method® that are still used today. The time-proven principles of the Berlitz Method®, a conversational teaching style, are constantly supplemented with new and updated information, and the latest multi-media lesson materials.

Today, in Canada over 300 dedicated professionals from coast to coast are committed to providing the most comprehensive approach to language learning available.

Berlitz Proficiency Levels

Berlitz has developed and standardized proficiency levels for all the languages we teach. There are 10 total levels, covering beginning to advanced skills. At the upper end of the advanced skill range, students can understand and use nuance expressions that are generally considered evidence of "native fluency".

Berlitz group classes are organized by proficiency level, so that students feel as comfortable as possible in the classroom setting. We also test students for proficiency before advancing them to higher level classes.

No ability whatsoever in the language, or knowledge limited to isolated words
and/or phrases.

Knowledge of language is sufficient to communicate in a very limited way, with the simplest oral and listening skills that can only be applied to a limited number of tasks and situations.

At the functional level, the user has a basic command of the language needed in a limited range of simple, routine and familiar tasks and situations.

Users can handle most uncomplicated communicative tasks and routine social and work situations. They can follow the general meaning of a conversation about familiar subjects.

At the intermediate level, users are able to refashion and combine learned material to meet their immediate communication and learning needs. They are able to comprehend information on familiar topics in contextualized settings and produce sustained conversation with others on an expanding variety of general topics.

Upper Intermediate

Users can, to an extent, initiate, sustain, and conclude most routine communicative tasks for personal and work needs.

At the upper intermediate level the users have assimilated the essentials of the language. They can communicate competently and comfortably in many professional and personal contexts, and can find different ways of formulating what they want to express.

Users begin to create with the language in more complex, cognitively demanding situations, and conversations and can deal comfortably with most subjects over the telephone.

At the advanced level users communicate effectively and appropriately even in demanding oral tasks and situations, such as conducting a meeting. They can participate easily in social and professional conversations, and can deal comfortably with most subjects over the telephone.

Users communicate effectively with various audiences on a wide range of familiar and new topics to meet most personal, academic or professional demands-including many which presume experience in public speaking and critical listening.

At the professional level users have full command of the language. They understand and can use virtually all linguistic structures as well as a range of vocabulary items as broad and deep as that of most educated native speakers. Communication is fluent, appropriate and well organized: at this level, users develop ideas in speech clearly and coherently.

A level of proficiency indistinguishable from that of an educated native speaker.
