New Zealand Language Institute

Our school is in Rotorua, a small city of about 70,000 people, situated about 2 ½ hours from Auckland Airport. It is a major tourist destination in New Zealand, famous for Maori culture, geothermal activity and its beautiful lakes.

We can be found on Floor 6, 1154 Hinemoa Street, right in the heart of the city. The premises are clean and bright and we have a large amount of resources to help you achieve your goals. We specialise in smaller class numbers and all classes have 10 or less students.

Beginning Courses and Orientation

You can begin your course at any time. Orientation starts with your homestay parents taking you to school on the first day. A staff member will guide you around our school facilities and explain the services we provide. You will be given an orientation booklet which includes information to help you settle into life at the New Zealand Language Institute and in Rotorua, such as school routines, access to health facilities, driving in NZ etc. Your counsellor will help you to open a bank account and then you will sit a placement test to help decide the best class for you..

All students under the age of 18 are required to reside in a homestay. All homestays are checked by the school and are subject to police vetting. Homestays have a right to provide information to the New Zealand Language Institute about a student’s welfare or breach of homestay rules. Students over the age of 18 may choose to reside in a homestay, hostel, boarding establishment or flat. This is arranged by themselves and at their own risk. We recommend a homestay as the best option for improving a student’s English and allowing them to experience and appreciate the New Zealand lifestyle.

Weekend and holiday activities

Once a week, your tutor arranges a social activity, such as sightseeing, mini-golf, ten-pin bowling, watching a movie, walking in the great outdoors etc. Occasionally, these activities are for the whole day or at the weekend, allowing us to explore beyond Rotorua, such as going to the beach in summer time and skiing in the winter time. Your activity fee pays for most of these activities but there is sometimes an extra charge.

We can also help you to join local clubs, such as tennis, badminton or rugby, if you wish. This is a very good way to meet New Zealanders and make new friends.
